Food recalls and knee-jerk reactions

An interesting perspective on how food-disease outbreaks and food recalls can cause knee-jerk reactions, yet have little lasting impact on consumer behavior, can be found here. (via)

In other news, I'm moving in less than two weeks and I haven't even begun to pack. At all. Oh god, I'm going to die. Why am I just sitting on the couch reading about E. coli?!

  1. Are you going to take another cross country road trip with Shaina?

  2. I might be heading to Ithaca in a few weeks for the first time in, gosh, nine years or something.

Do you have any recommendations for me?

  3. #1 - Oh my gosh, yes. Go to Just a Taste, a tapas restaurant on the commons. It's my favorite restaurant EVER (in Ithaca or otherwise). Order the "Local flight" of wine and get a taste of the wine of the Fingerlakes!

Speaking of wine, depending on how much time you have, it's a fun day trip to drive out to Seneca lake for a wine tour. Herman J. Weimer makes my favorite riesling ever.

#2 - I will also be in Ithaca in a few weeks, funny coincidence, eh.

#3 - I'm driving across the country, yes, but this time with my dad. I'll reunite with Shaina in Boston!

  4. If I see you on the street (or at JaT or anywhere else in Ithaca), I'll certainly introduce myself. I've always had this imagine of me bumping into you somewhere and introducing myself as the long-time anonymous blog fan...

My guess is that I'll end up being there in the June 22-25 window... I need to figure out how to get there, though. Should I fly into NYC and head up from there somehow, or arrive somewhere upstate. How easy will it be to get to/from NYC area? I think I've always driven up with people, but don't think I have people to drive up with, and don't have any interest in renting a car. Maybe I can take grandma's car?

  5. Huh. The only Weimer I know is Paul Weimer, President-elect (probably President by now) of the AAPG. Good guy.

  6. What about biking around one of the lakes? I remember an epic post about doing that. I think I might recall that it might not be something I want to endeavor, and that it may not have worked out so well...

  7. I biked around Cayuga Lake with my family one year! It's about 88 miles, and took me ~6 hours of biking, plus time to stop & pee, buy Gatorade, etc. It worked out just fine for ME (I won the race!), but some of the riders pooped out a little over halfway through. So, if you do it....make sure you have a backup plan for when you do not make it all the way around.
